Every individual is affected by cancer in his or her lifetime one way or another, either diagnosed with cancer or knew someone who is suffering from the deadly disease. According to World Health Organization estimates, nearly 20,000 cases of cancers are diagnosed each year in Afghanistan. Breast cancer is identified as the most common type of cancer accounting for approximately 15% of all cancer cases. Other common types of cancers in Afghanistan include stomach, esophagus, cervix uteri, corpus uteri, lung, and lip and oral cancers.
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimates that nearly 15, 000 people in Afghanistan died of cancer in 2012. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women while stomach cancer among men. It is estimated that in every 100 Afghans, 12 will get cancer at some point before the age of 75 and unfortunately almost 11 of them will die. (IARC, 2012)
